Tell us about yourself?

I’m a 43 year old, father of three, and business owner situated in Western Australia’s Gascoyne Regional town of Carnarvon.

What interested/attracted you to buy your first metal detector?

I found myself in need of a way to escape the stresses of running a business and managing staff and detecting provided me just that.  Detecting has been a  great form of meditation and adventure rolled into one.

When did you use your Coiltek coil fist & how did you find this experience?

I first purchased a Coiltek Goldhawk 10×5 Coil in early 2023 and I was blown away with how sensitive and how accurately I could detect such tiny pieces of gold.  It proved invaluable when detecting rocky creek beds and areas where other coils simply could not fit between or up against structures.

How has metal detecting benefitted your lifestyle?

My lifestyle and general mental health has benefited enormously since taking up detecting almost 3 years ago.  It has enabled me to ‘switch-off’ and only focus on the ground in front of me with the prospect of digging up the unknown.  Detecting also provided a great reason to go bush and share the whole camping experience with those close to me, including my children, who really get a kick out of it.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start metal detecting?

Ask lots of questions; Buy the best detector you can afford; and like life, don’t take it too seriously.

What has been your most significant experience or find to date?

My best find to date would be discovering a fresh 3 ounce patch, which included a 26 gram nugget and numerous sunbakers averaging 2-3 grams each.

Who or what inspired you to start detecting?

I’ve always had the desire to purchase a good detector, I remember using my grandfather’s detector when I was a child.   I’m an explorer by nature, and so when I could afford to buy my first GPX 6000 there was no stopping.  I am inspired today by the old timers, who managed to locate gold deposits without the modern tech that we have today……what an accomplishment it must have been back in the day!!
