Striking Gold in the Black Hills with the Coiltek Goldhawk

Latest Discoveries Competition Winner – Aaron Woodward

In the last four years I’ve done my share of detecting for gold in Arizona during the winter, and I even landed a 2.5 ouncer along the way, but the famous Black Hills of South Dakota always called my name during the summer months while I’m up there avoiding that southern heat. I’ve put in a little bit of time detecting in the Black Hills but it’s an entirely different ballgame compared to Arizona. I guess I’d say it’s just not as easy. This summer my trusty GPX-6000 equipped with the Coiltek 14”x9” Goldhawk coil made almost light work of snagging my first bit of detected gold in South Dakota with the GPX-6000. It was found in some ancient high bench “scraps” left behind millions of years ago, hundreds of feet above the modern creek. Lots of bedrock changes and mineralization changes but I had no problem hearing this bit stuck a few inches down in the bedrock cracks, under a few inches of soil and vegetation. While it’s not the biggest piece I’ve ever found, (weighing in at .4 of a gram) it’s one that gets the ball rolling in a new area and gives a person hope for the next one! Thanks Coiltek!
